I went on xbox live today and saw that the NBA 2k10 draft combine was only 400 points (five dollars) so I decided to purchase it and post my impressions.
You start the game by creating a player, with plenty of options from changing your accessories to your hair color. As well as the structure of your own face. After you choose all of those options you can choose specific animations for your created player. There are many options to choose from, which is obviously great. Than you finally begin and you are greeted by your “mentor”. This person is there to give you information and tips on how to become the greatest basketball player you can be.
From there you have some options, You can play a game, run some drills, shoot around, or run a scrimmage. Currently I have run one scrimmage, six drills, and two games. I must say that I had to get back to playing some 2k basketball. I am really used to NBA Live but I really have enjoyed the two games I have played so far. Something relieving is that 2k lowers your “Team rating” ( You get points for passing or deducted points for bad shots ect) on things that other games will not. In superstar mode for Madden you can call and get the ball thrown to you on a good percentage of plays, but not in the draft combine. Expect your rating to go down if you excessively tap the “A” button.
In the draft combine you really have to play smart basketball to excel in the game. The first game I got graded with a “F” because of my bad play. I was constantly taking too many shots and not being in the correct position. In the second game I played I raised my grade up to a “C+”. I think I could have gotten it up to a “B” but one of the objectives was to make two 3 point shots which I just could not make.
The Drills portion of the game can get specific attributes to boost up for your player. There are offensive/defensive rebounding, dribbling, running, and other drills to make your player well rounded. The better you get in these drills means you can get higher rewards. If you get a bronze metal you will get an increase in a certain attribute. But most times if you get silver or gold you can actually choose what attribute you want to raise.
Overall, I really think the Draft Combine is a good value at 5 dollars. Especially if you are dieing to get your hands on NBA 2k10. I have not played the series in a long time, probably not since 2k7. But it is definitely refreshing to see that doing stupid things in the game harms your grade. You can usually get away with unfair tactics in NBA Live or Madden. But in the 2k Draft Combine you need to play like a real basketball player. Distribute the ball and make your teammates better, which will in turn make yourself better.
I will mention that there really is no energy in the actual game, so it can get kind of boring. Music plays during the games, so there is no loud roars by the crowd if you make a big block. Plus the negative to the music is that it seems to be the same three songs playing over and over again.
